On January 25th I had a good conversation about issues confronted by young people online as part of St. Paul’s Hot Topics discussion series. One thing that became very clear is that there is too much information to cover in an hour, so I’m following up with some posts about this topic. A federal appeals court has overruled a decision that allowed business processes and software to be patented. This terrific news and should go a long way in helping to protect high tech innovation in the United States.
I haven’t taken many new pictures lately, but I have a lot of pictures from our summer vacation so I thought I’d share a few of those.
Today was Max and Adair’s first day of school, and for Adair it was her first first day. The kids did fine, but mom did tear up a bit as she put her baby on the bus.

I’ve been reading Design Patterns by Gamma, et al. because it’s a somewhat interesting and influential book, and because programmers are widely expected to have read it. But you don’t become a better programmer by reading about programming, in the same way that reading about running doesn’t make you a better runner. You have to write some code. I decided to implement some of the patterns in Python, first, because I like Python, and second, because I wanted to compare examples in Python with the C++ examples in the book.
